The Homeless tab records basic homeless information as well as district-defined fields. The list of homeless records is sorted by Start Date.

Michigan has defined Homeless fields that are unique to the state of Michigan. Further information on these fields is described below. For information on all other fields, please see the Homeless article.

Homeless students are defined as:

  • Individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence
  • Share housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason
  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations
  • Living in emergency or transitional shelters
  • Abandoned in hospitals

Primary Night Time Residence

Use this field to select the student's primary nighttime residence.

10SheltersChildren and youth living in shelters and transitional housing programs (homeless and domestic violence programs). Children and youth awaiting foster care placement.
11Transitional Housing
Children living in emergency or transitional housing.
13Doubled-Up
Children and youth (including runaway youth or unaccompanied youth) who live with relatives or friends due to being homeless.
14Hotel/Motel
Children and youth living in hotels/motels due to a lack of alternative adequate accommodations.
15UnshelteredChildren and youth living in abandoned buildings, campgrounds and vehicles, space not meant for habitation, trailers or FEMA trailers, cars, bus and train stations, and abandoned in the hospital. Unsheltered may include substandard or inadequate housing that does not easily fit into any category as it is not governed by a specific definition and is judged on a case-by-case basis. An inadequate dwelling may shelter but it is not adequate housing.

Unaccompanied Youth

Indicates a child or youth who meets the McKinney-Vento definition and is not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
