In Indiana, Alternative Education programs are designed to meet the needs of public school students in grades 6-12 who have not been successful in the traditional setting. Students are provided with a variety of options that can lead to graduation and are supported by services essential to success. The information provided below is specific to data entry and State Reporting requirements for Indiana (Student Alternative Education Program Associations)

Students may have multiple Alternative Education records. However, Alternative Education dates should not overlap one another. Previous records must be end-dated and assigned a Reason Exited status before creating a new record.

Use the Filter By Start/End Date fields to find specific records. Select the Apply button to apply the filter dates.

Add/Modify an Alternative Education Record

  1. Select the New button. The Program Information editor displays.
  2. Enter the applicable information for the student.
  3. Select the Save icon when finished. The saved record is displayed in the Alternative Education editor list.
  4. Select the View button to see the record details. Users with the necessary tool rights can modify or delete records from this view. 
To ensure proper reporting, enter the correct start/end dates for the record. Once an End Date is entered for the student's participation in the program, be sure to enter a Reason Exited status for the student.

Use the Federal/State Program Update Wizard to import existing Alternative Education records for students or to update records for multiple students.  

Program Information Fields

Indiana Alternative Education program data is reported in the Student Alternative Education Program Associations Ed-Fi resource.

Program Status

Identifies the status of the alternative education program.

Program NameThe state-approved alternative education program in which the student is participating.
Users may only select state-approved programs from the drop-down list. If the desired program is not included in the list, contact the Indiana Department of Education.

  • 2: Attained the goals identified in the student's ISP.
  • 3: Made satisfactory progress toward goals identified in the ISP.
  • 4: Did not make satisfactory progress toward ISP but remained in the program.
  • 5: Transferred/returned to another school setting prior to completing program.
  • 6: Dropped out of program, not returning to any educational setting.
  • 7: Expelled from program, not returned to any educational setting.
  • 10: Incarcerated
  • 11: Earned High School Diploma
  • 14: Deceased

  • 01: Student intends to withdraw or has withdrawn before graduation.
  • 02: Student has failed to comply academically.
  • 03: Student is a parent or an expectant parent.

  • 05: The student is a disruptive student.

Alternative Education Information in Ad hoc Reporting 

Alternative Education information is available in the Query Wizard for Student Data Type filters in the Student > Learning > State Program > AltProgram folder. Fields available on the Indiana Alternative Education detail editor are noted in the Alternative Education Field Descriptions section above.
